Eggshell

Eggshell, material driven design

It has an oval shape. It is made of calcium hydrogen carbonate. It is fragile, not elastic, smooth, hard. A source of protein.

This catalogue is the collection of a series of experiments with eggshell and the aim is to elicit meaningful experiences by tinkering the material. The adopted method – Material Driven Design – emphasises the journey of a designer from tangible to abstract and then from abstract back to tangible I.

According to the source, Scenario 3 in this case is relevant. ‘Designing with a material proposal with semi-developed or exploratory samples. Since the material is semi-developed, its properties are to be further defined through the design process in relation to a selected application area, also to generate feedback for further materials development. Furthermore it is difficult to recognize and is in need of  the designer to propose meaningful applications II.’

This short project give me the opportunity to start thinking about a refined methodology in research and experimentation. I decided to concentrate on one material within my samples because it was the only one which gave a realistic opportunity of development. On the left page there are two diagrams created with the user’s feedbacks. In the first case the level of comfort was really low, because of the slimy surface. This quality influenced the users in all the other opinions about it.

The Latex one has been quiet appreciated as an object itself. This probably means that the sample was already too refined and did not elicit useful feedbacks.Inspired by the MDD method I created those diagrams/maps in order to ‘discover underlying motivations of designing or using a material across a variety of textures.  A mind-map can also effectively depict interrelationships between detected performances, meanings, emotions, and sensorial qualities ’. It is interesting how user’s feedback can be thought in different ways in order to focus people on precise aspects.
